How to Have The Courage to Go After What You Want

*** Please note I am a 20-year-old trying to give advice. Make of that what you will.***

J.K. Rowling, Oprah Winfrey, Elvis Presley, and Thomas Edison. Different people yet they all share one thing in common. Surprisingly, they all struggled with rejection before reaching success.

As we all know, success is seldom a straight line. In fact, what good ever came from a straight line? The best things in life are achieved through squiggly lines. We wind our way around obstacles, learn from our mistakes and grow from the pain. We DO have the courage to go after what we want in life. Because, somewhere, it means a hell of a lot to us individually.

Going after what you want may not be as simple as you think. It may be difficult. It may push you out of your comfort zone into an uncomfortable place. But, will it be worth it? 100%.

So how does one go after the things they want? There is no right or wrong way to go about achieving what you want but, there ARE ways of bettering your chances. Here’s my top 5 on how:

  1. Put yourself out there. Hone in on your assets.

The scariest thing to do but the most beneficial is to just PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE. Putting yourself out there means stepping outside of your comfort zone – a concerning thought. But, as the saying goes – “nothing good ever came from your comfort zone. Use social media to network. Find motivation through your idols. Start up a website, use it to promote whatever the hell you want.

2. Be prepared for some unwanted negativity

Whether you do something or nothing at all, the reality is people will talk. Some will admire you and some will project their own insecurities and jealousy onto you. What matters is what you’re doing and the impact it’s having on others. Some may even speak from a place of concern but the best thing you can do is follow your gut. If I listened to every piece of advice I was given, I wouldn’t be doing what I do today.

3. Failure is not to be feared – embrace it

Easier said than done but any push-backs or rejections only make you realise how badly you want it. It’s all down to your mindset. Use the bad to push you towards the good. Failing doesn’t make you a failure. It means you tried and you’ll try again. You make mistakes and you learn from them.

What success really looks like.

4. Don’t expect it all to happen overnight

Like the image above shows, success happens when you put in the efforts little by little, each day, every day. Success doesn’t magically happen overnight – although I often wish it did. Your efforts will always pay off, you just have to keep going.

5. Know that you are capable. This is your journey and nobody else’s

With social media constantly lurking in the background, from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep, it’s easy enough to compare how our lives are going to the tropical sunshine-filled lives of those we follow on Instagram.

It’s important to remember that everyone, including ourselves, picks and chooses what they upload onto social media. It’s rare that anybody mentions their failures or setbacks. Remember that. This journey is yours, not anybody else’s. Go at your own pace and keep doing what’s right for you. Stop putting yourself down.

Ciao for now x
