Getting My Thoughts Together: 3 Organisation Tips – Bath Mind

Organisation can benefit both your mental and physical health. Whilst a clean and clutter-free space can help physical health, it seems all kinds of organisation can impact your mental health. So, what are the benefits?

  • You make room for more sufficient mental energy by ridding worries of forgetting or “procrastinating on an important project or task”, according to Psychology Today.
  • Enables a sense of control. As somebody who gets spells of anxiety, feeling in control of a tidy bedroom or having a week that follows a slight plan, makes a huge difference.
  • Gives you the ability to prioritise and achieve higher levels of productivity, so that task you’ve been putting off gets done.

Here are my three top tips:

  1. Invest in a diary.

Whilst I am very bias in the sense that I am a slight notebook hoarder, having a diary to plan your week or day is always handy. I find myself constantly jotting things down that I need to get done in said day or week. Despite being 20-years-old, I have the memory of a goldfish! I’ll write anything down from emails to plans made with friends. It takes away the panic of forgetting. Diaries don’t have to cost an arm and a leg – I got my elephant-covered one in The Works for £1.50…

2. Set up a morning or night routine.

Bare with me, it sounds like more of a hassle than it is! Having a routine brings a sense of structure you never knew you needed. Whether it’s 10-minutes or half an hour. I’ve purposely designed my morning routine so that I have extra time in the morning to gather my thoughts and “come round”, as I like to phrase it. I’m not much of a morning person and so, provided my unreliable alarm doesn’t let me down, I utilise this time to prepare myself for the day ahead. As a whole my morning routine consists of; making a cup of tea, meditating for 10 minutes, lighting an incense and listening to a podcast.

What you choose to do in that time is completely up to you, which is the beauty of it. What matters is that whatever you do, is beneficial for you and you alone. It could be watching your favourite TV show, making time to meditate, reading a book or taking a shower – whatever works for you.

3. The space around you matters.

The physical space around us impacts on our state of mind greatly. A messy, and cluttered space will most likely make you feel as though you can’t think straight. Whereas, a tidy and clean space (bonus points for organised) will give your mind some “breathing space” and encourage a more calm and refreshed mood. When possible, ensure each object in your space has its own place. Allow time each morning or night to put things back where they belong. The relief of coming home or waking up to a tidy space is up there with one of my favourite feelings.

I always find that I begin to feel a little claustrophobic when the space around me becomes messy. I become easily agitated and my morning routine is disrupted when the space around me is chaotic.
