5 Ways to be Vulnerable and Put Yourself Out There

Vulnerability. A word that, just by looking at it makes us all want to retract back into the sheltering shell that keeps us “safe”. Being vulnerable is scary and uncomfortable, and it isn’t a state anyone likes to remain in for too long.

My sister made a valid point to me a few weeks ago when I went through a cycle of being hard on myself. She told me, “People are going to be jealous. What you’re doing is vulnerable by putting yourself out there. It’s not easy to do”.

It sparked my thinking on the power of vulnerability, a word so strongly affiliated with weakness and pain yet, the same notion we’ve been continuously told is the key to unlocking inner greatness. Don’t get me wrong, being vulnerable and putting yourself out there can feel terrifying even for the likes of Will Smith. But Smith says, “The best things in life are on the other side of fear”.

Naturally, it doesn’t always mean we’ll end up with the preferable outcome. What it does mean is that we’ve dared to be vulnerable, and that is brave in itself. Readying yourself to be vulnerable can be tricky. Hopefully these next five tips will help you on your way.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

You’ll soon find yourself back at square one if you launch yourself into depths you aren’t ready to swim. Push yourself out of your comfort zone, yes. But do so with long-term intent for YOURSELF and not to please anybody else.

This journey is for you and your passions. Figure out why you’re daring to be great and if not for you, who for? And why? Keep a strong motive behind every aspiration to keep determination flowing and consistently topped up.

Change Your Perception of Rejection

No matter what anyone says, rejection IS hard. Yet that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a necessity to both our growth and progression throughout life. Rejection is never easy but becoming accustomed to it can help bear the butt-hurt ego afterwards…

Take the rejections as a learning curve and an opportunity to reflect on what in your life could currently do with some work.

Recognise That Vulnerability is NOT Weakness

The stigma persists so long as we continue to feed into the idea that vulnerability equals weakness. Being vulnerable is one of the most courageous ways to live. Without it, we can never fully know how far our limits can be pushed. And without pushing the limits we can never truly discover our greatest successes. Vulnerability is strength.

The World and His Wife Will Always Have an Opinion

Whether you choose to do something or nothing at all, somebody will always have something to say. And for every know-it-all, there will be many that admire what you do and find strength to push themselves too. Often, those that try to tear you down or project hate onto you are the same individuals with their own mountain of insecurities and jealousy. Do not, under any circumstance, stop you from going after what you want.

Embrace the Unknown

Here’s another daunting word to throw into the mix – the UNKNOWN. A place that is a lot more frightening in our minds than it is in reality. Don’t let fear of an idea stop you from chasing your goals. When you embrace the unknown you set free goals that were once limited by uncertainty. And when you can access your goals, life changes for the greater good.
