Mental health Charity sidekick Collaborate with Botany & Books

Mental health charity, sidekick has teamed up with small creative business Botany&Books to create a bespoke book and candle gift set in honour of Mental Health Awareness Week taking place from 10-16 May 2021. With this in mind, the sidekick team were determined to do something unique with the support of a meaningful partnership.

The charity is run entirely by volunteers and provides a free mental health platform via its app which can be found on Apple and Android app stores. The platform is home to a growing collection of interactive exercises, tools, and tips to boost mental wellbeing.

Botany&Books create candles inspired by the location of books and pair them with pre-loved copies of novels. Founder of the company, Thalia began candle-making when she was unwell with anxiety. While the focus remains on the calming symbolism of candles, being eco-friendly is a huge driver for the company, using only second-hand books and recycled packaging.

When sidekick and Botany&Books began following each other on social media they soon realised two things they had in common – books and mental health. Research has shown reading to have many benefits for mental wellbeing, one being that it “put[s] our brains into a state similar to meditation, and it brings the same health benefits of deep relaxation and inner calm”, according to SACAP.

Heather from sidekick comments, “If you’re in a bad mental health space, it’s nice to pick up a book, read a couple of pages and take some time for yourself. This book is perfect because it’s helpful and easy to read. Often mental health books are quite heavy, but this is broken down into short chapters, lists and poetry.”

A pre-loved copy of the book ‘Reasons to Stay Alive’ by Matt Haig will feature in the gift set for the Mental Health Awareness Week collaboration with both Thalia and Heather from sidekick commenting that this has helped them in times of need. In his book, Haig discusses his personal experiences of depression, providing coping mechanisms, tips and tools for anyone struggling.

Alongside the book, each gift set will include a handmade ginger and lime-scented soy wax candle labelled ‘Being’, with the intention to energise and bring you into the present moment. You can also expect a hand-painted bookmark by Laura at CanvasbyLP, who paints to not only improve her own mental health but as a way of raising money for charity through every purchase.

40% of the profits made from the bespoke gift set will go to sidekick, helping them continue to improve their app, create new tools, educate and encourage more conversations about mental health.

You can pre-order the gift set here, and find out more about sidekick and Botany&Books by visiting their websites or following them on social media.
